Exclamation 01 Lexus LS430 Shift Switch Malfunction

I was driving one night, when suddenly I could not accelerate anymore and the car began to slow down and the battery sign came on. In addition, the wheel and pedals became stiff and the car was in a way 'shutting down' although I could hear the motor still running. I pulled to the right and put it in 'park' when I realized that at the front dashboard the 'P' was not illuminated. I shifted to 'R' 'N' 'D', etc but it showed no sign that the gears were shifting. I turned the car off in order to restart it. Upon turning the key, the starter seemed to spin/run but the car was not actually starting. As a result, the battery is dead. I know the battery was fine because i recently changed it. I also had the shift switch changed but the same incident occured. Any ideas as to what could be the problem. Does this seem like an electrical problem? Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tatyana

Maybe your alternator is not charging up the battery? If so, even a new battery will die quickly. If that were the case, the engine is firing off the battery rather than the alternator. Once the battery is low, you will slowly lose all electrical as well as spark plug ignition. When the engine dies, you will brake vacuum booster power, ECT transmission will also falter. Starter batteries can only be discharged a couple of times until they are shot, unlike a deep cycle battery.

+1 highly likely it your alternator......if it killed your battery like that you will need a new one. You can't recharge a battery when it's been drained that bad.

+2 On electrical problem. An alternator and/or battery problem will cause all kinds of crazy electrical issues. Get the alternator and battery checked.
