I agree... to disagree... haha.

For me, it's just that I've always done my own oil changes, back to when I was living with my parents and changing the oil in the under-building garage. I would just feel "strange" having someone change the oil. My RX was changed at the dealer once because the mileage was up and I was in for something, so I just said "yea... why not..."

But I do agree, if I had a dealership charging $50, on the way to work (diversion less than 5 miles) and would give me a loaner rather than wait... then I'd drop if off too. Drive to dealer, drop, pick up loaner, go to work, leave work, get car, go home.

I pay $50 + change for a synthetic change and tire rotation at the tire dealer. My regular mechanic charges about the same but tire dealer is walking distance from work.

Paid $43 for an AC filter. Took him all of 3 min. to open the glove box and change it. I think I can manage that next time.

I'm at the 1 year mark in my 05 LS 430. Best car I've ever had or am likely to have.

I get a box (6qts) of Mobile1 from Costco ($32). I also stocked up on oem Toyota oil filters when a local Toyota dealer had a sale ($4 each). I picked up 16 filters and drain plug washers (and I'm down to the last one now!)

I use Rhino-Ramps on the LS430... just drive up, open the lower flap, drain, change filter...etc. SO easy! Everything is easy to access.

My LX470 is even easier because I don't even need to raise it up .

Sure, paying for an oil change might not be bad.. but in the long run (and we all keep our Lexus' for the long run)... it saves a bunch... plus you know it was done right.... right?

On March 21, 2009, I paid $112.75CAD for Lubrication Service:

$54.95 for 0.48 hours of labor @ $115/hr
$7.14 for the 90915-YZZD3 filter
$0.60 for oil filter gasket
$27.09 for 8 units of 5W-20
$10.00 for "fabric protection"
$12.97 federal+provincial sales tax

On January 29, 2010, I paid $0.80 for the oil filter gasket and $26.94 for 6 units of 5W-20 @ $4.49/unit. This was for Maintenance Service, so it was 1.8 hours @ $106/hr. I provided my own 90915-20004 filter so there was no cost for that.

I am not sure if 5W-20 is good for the car. The arguments presented at http://www.synlube.com/sae5w-20.htm show that OEM spec of 5W-30 is better for engine life.

"You get about 1% better fuel economy, but you get 30% shorter engine life"
"SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil is GREAT – It yields better EPA numbers than SAE 5W-30 oil = better CAFE = lower Federal Fines for not meeting minimal CAFE standards. It typically to the manufacturer saves about $15.00 per vehicle in Federal CAFE Fines."
"SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil increases oil consumption – More oil gets used, just great for oil companies everywhere."
"SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil increases mechanical wear, reduces engine life – that way you will buy new car sooner = more sales for car manufacturer."

My recent 35K service was $121.94. It included oil change, tire rotation, fluids topped, full inspection, exterior wash, interior vacuumed, and a loaner car. They also:

- programmed all my keys because the valet key was missing when I bought a new key last time (no additional charge)

- Transmission inspection and code check for occasional rough shifting around 40 MPH. No problem detected, no charge.

- Replace steering wheel telescopic unit, $548.35

- Misc. supplies shop charge: $15.23

$121.94 ain't too bad Caddy dude for all that. I figure each below:

$49 oil change
$40 rotation
$12 car wash and vacuum
$79 loaner for one day
Total: $180.

That's not including "topping off" the fluids. I'd take that deal every once in a while.

All my servicing is free. I work for a Toyota dealership in Hawaii. I'm a technician, so it'd stupid for me to pay someone to work on my car.

$25 for parts and 30 minutes of my time, doing it myself is the ultimate luxury, as I don't have to drive to any shop and take all the BS people give me on my own damn car

K&N oil filter $15
5W30 $30

Knowing some nit-wit didn't use an impact wrench to tighten the drain plug
and all the screws went back where they belong. PRICELESS.

Thinking about getting a PurePower oil filter

My 88000km Lubrication Service yesterday was $48.84 after tax.

I found the only Toyota dealership in my region that is allowed to work on a Lexus, and it is worth the 30min drive there. I am VERY satisfied with the service and price.

My appointment was for 1pm and I arrived at exactly 1pm. They had a big comfy leather couch and free Wi-Fi so I got some work done on my laptop while the service was being performed. I drove out of there at exactly 2pm. I am sure they drained as much of the old oil as they could.

They used the 90915-20004 oil filter that I provided, filled exactly 4.5L of 5W-30 Toyota Genuine Motor Oil as I requested (and specified in the manual), gave me the 0.5L remaining from the 5th bottle (which I didn't expect), and charged me the Toyota ExpressLube price (which I was hoping for).

Toyota Labor: $79.95/hr * 0.30 hours
TGMO: 4.69/L = $23.45
Oil drain plug gasket: $0.80
Silicone grease: $0.85
Lubricated all locks, latchs, hinges
Inspected engine air filter, drive belts, tire wear and pressure, all fluids
No environmental fees
Did not rotate tires, did not wash the car

My prior 2 (and only 2) Lexus dealership oil changes were $113 after tax, and they charged for 6L of oil when the specification is 4.5L. This cost would have been higher if I didn't supply my own filter.

It seems that for $64 more, the additional benefits of Lexus service is that they will wash the car after, overfill the oil (or overcharge you), and charge you for fabric protection, disposal, materials, or other silly charges.

Considering it's winter and the car will be dirty within 2 minutes of driving away, and that they would probably put light scratches in the car by using improper tools/techniques, I was glad they didn't wash the car.

Not knocking this dealership - I just don't trust any dealership's courtesy washes or detailers. They normally do everything as fast as possible, reusing shammys, towels, etc, and the job usually isn't performed by a true professional detailer.

Every Lexus appointment I've had (only 4) resulted in an unsatisfactory courtesy clean.

Hit 30 k miles on the LS. Had oil changed at Grapevine Park Place Lexus this week. I brought my own oil and filter to the dealer (paid approx $30 dollars for 6 quarts of Valvoline Platinum Plus, and $5.40 for a Toyota oil filter ). The Lexus dealer charged me $32 for oil change labor (includes topping fluids, wash, etc). I also had rear diff oil changed for $90, and brake fluid flushed ($110).

Amusing anecdote on the Highlander oil change - Did the same with my Highlander (just oil change) last week and brought my own oil (Valvoline Platinum Plus). When I went to pick up the car the jug of Valvoline was still sitting in the passenger foot well...seems the tech forgot to use my oil - used the regular dealer bulk dino oil instead. They were pretty embarrassed...so they quickly did the oil change again using my oil and comped me the entire service charge for my trouble. So the oil in the Highlander is very clean right now.
