pull out all the little tabs holding the carpet on to the trunk lid and then pull the carpet out around the handle and light thing and the pull the carpet back far enough to reach in and turn and pull out the bulbs and then replace the bulbs and then put it all back together again and then pat yourself on the back and then....

What???? Emergency handle? Inside the car? You're trying to change the license plate light on the trunk lid right?

You don't remove the carpet inside the trunk, the carpet on the trunk lid is what you remove.

^ ^ ^ yeah and the emergency handle release for the trunk is attached to the trunk lid... seriously. yeah originally i tried to remove the emergency trunk release handle and light instead of just the carpet around the stuff and failed epically the first go round then someone said to just remove the carpet from around the stuff and it worked like a charm, just fine...
