Default side mirrors acting up

OK so my left side view mirror on my 01 ls430 will not fold out by itself anymore, all I hear is a mechanical whirring and clicking sound when the mirror tries to fold out, and I have to physically help push the mirror out with my hand. I brought it to the dealer and they said that one of the gears was worn down. They said that it would cost around $900 to fix. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could fix this without having to get ripped off?

Mine stopped working the other way, i.e wouldn't fold in all the way, I think it was through lack of use, I switched them to fold in when engine off and left them alone for several days and they now go in and out so fast it creates a draft!!!!.

Try that, if no good then there are always a good selection on ebay in various colors... Here is a link to a white one... only $50 but no guarantee it works, probably make a good one from the parts...fully tested and guaranteed ones are around $150

Good Luck
