Bad Wheel Bearing- Cost to Fix and/or Degree of Difficulty for Replacement
02 LS430 UL developed a bad wheel bearing at the driver's side front wheel at around 90k. Thumping noise and vibration at highway speeds which gets worse on turns. I looked for the parts and it seems that there is two options- 1) a bearing and 2) a hub assembly with bearing included. I was wondering which to replace because the cost of the two is like night and day.
Bearing~$50
Hub Assembly~$350 (I noticed it includes the wheel speed sensor and all as well)
Has anyone dealt with a bad bearing on the LS430? Also, I am not able to get to my repair manual CD so if anyone has one handy, would you be kind enough to post the replacement procedure? Is this a DIY or a repair shop trip in the making? TIA

I have had a bad left rear wheel bearing on one of my previous LSs but it was taken care of under warranty.
The bearing will require a hydraulic press so it is a job for a workshop unless you have the proper tools.
However, I would suggest contacting Lexus Corporate for goodwill help with this. They just might agree to the labour if you pay for the parts, and the whole thing if you are lucky.

OK, so I'm looking at my repair manual and it indicates in the suspension section that the bearing should be replaced however only the removal of the hub and then the speed sensor from the hub is detailed. No information is given on how to remove the bearing from the hub.
Does Lexus recommend the entire hub be replaced? If so, why does the manual say to replace the "bearing?" I know that the bearings are sold so do any of you know where in the manual I can find instructions to remove the bearing from the hub? TIA

How common is this problem? Anyone else with high mileage LS430's like myself currently going through this repair?

Lexus charged my $500 to replaced the wheel hub bearing. The bearing is bad but they said they need to replaced the whole thing.
I had it replaced since I destroyed my front left suspension when hitting the curb.

Rear Hubs
Drivers side rear hub went bad at 132K on 2006 LS430. Passenger side rear hub went shortly thereafter. Probably best to do both at same time. Roughly $500 each. Not a DIY job. Huge pain in the butt. Front hubs are plausible for DIY, not the rears.

i had my right front bearing go bad at 1758xx miles. was covered underdealer warranty where i got the car, however they did have to send it out to be pressed out/in. i do know from work ive done on 4wd rearends that if bearings have to be pressed in then have it done. pita if you try yourself.

front wheel bearing
I did my front passenger side. Replaced hub assembly got from rock auto timken brand, like others have said expect the hub to be pressed out. Really wasn't difficult , I unbolted caliper , removed rotor, unbolted upper ,, used the 2 hammer method to pop upper ball joint from steering knuckle ( take 2 hammers and strike the sides around the joint at the smae time and it pops apart). remove the 2 bolts t bottom of steering knuckle, I tried for over an hour to get bearing out of knuckle no luck, I then took the steering knuckle and the new bearing to a local repair shop that had a press. the popped old one out and new one in for 35.00. reassembled .
