Exclamation 2002 LS430 - Rattle in Dash...

Is this a common issue? It seems that whatever is rattling is right behind the NAV. For the last 5k miles or so (currently have 69k miles), it seems to be getting louder and more pronounced.

If anyone has fixed this issue before, could you please give me some insight as to how the NAV comes out and what exactly is rattling?

Thank you very much.

I have the same problem, mine is 02LS430 with 77,000 miles. The rattle started at around 50,000 miles.

I also have a rattle in my dash. It comes from the center of the dash, just above the nav screen. I assumed it came from when I had my Blue Lockpick installed for the nav, but they claim it could not have been them.

If anyone figures out what is rattling, I would love to know.

My SA at the dealership said to just take out the NAV and insulate the area behind it with something.

Problem doesn't seem to be the NAV system. It's wiring and/or a loose part of the dash.

Try some felt tape between the seams of plastic trim. I did it in my car, it helped a lot.

LA Wheel is correct. I have had this issue on both of my LS430s (03 and 04). This is the fix the dealer did in both cases.

Unfortunately I don't have any instructions. Any qualified upholstery shop should be able to do this for you.

There may be some instructions posted online somewhere.

My upholstery shop did most of the work on the interior (I had also sound deadened the whole car - 3 week project). I also had my stereo shop eliminate some small additional rattles for just yesterday, they also used some stick-on velcro and felt tape.

I fixed two rattles in my dash. The first was one that came and went with changes in the interior temp and whether hot or cold air was blowing out the center vents. I removed the vent assembly and inspected it and found that it is attached to the nav assembly with a "snap fit", basically plastic-on-plastic. All I did was apply some bulb grease (the only grease I had, or I guess you could use vaseline) to the attachment points. The vent assembly was now free to flex independently of the nav assembly without making and creaks or noises.

The second and worst rattle was around the nav assembly towards the sides. I removed the nav assembly and found that there are two metal v-shaped clips on each side that provide a friction fit between the plastic male pins on the nav surround piece and the metal female receptacles in the dashboard. These metal clips have a felt tape on them that had worn through. I just took a piece of electrical tape and taped over felt tape, which both isolated the metal clip-to-metal receptacle contact and gave the nav surround a nice tight fit in the dash. Problem completely solved.

Now the only rattle I seem to have is the ignition key in the ignition. Anyone know if this can be fixed with a new ignition cylinder?

Removal of the nav assembly requires you to start at the bottom of the dash and remove each section from the bottom up. It very easy to do and takes only a few minutes.
