Is there away with some type of hack to make the 01 system have the options and menus like an 06 ? Maybe take a disc from a newer car, copy some files from a 01 disc, and get it to update the firmware to the newer version. I'm sure someone must of attempted something like this...

Or could someone just pull out the 01 nav system and DVD drive from the trunk and just replace it with a set from a 05/06 to get the new features, bluetooth, etc. If I got the chance to get the pair, would it just plug right in, or is the harnesses different ?

This is what I am talking about for a "hack". I would still like to be able to use all the features wile driving but, with a newer version of the nav system if possable.
As far as getting the new menu's, you'd have to get a gen4 ECU, which is the part located in your trunk (where the DVD is inserted).

Bluetooth from what i have gathered (as i am interested in this myself for the GS) is built into the navi unit up front. I wish someone would do some research and give us the findings, as it would be very nice to have BT in the GS as well.

The Other hack you speak off needs a hybrid disk, where you copy the startup file from a 5.1disk, and add it with the 7.1 Map data to achieve what you need.

David, that would be a nice 'hack' but I'm betting there's firmware in the head (unit in dash) that would be incompatible with the drive. Additionally, I'm betting the wiring harness would not fit a new drive.......now that I think of it, the newer drives may not even be located in the trunk. I have a friend who has '05 (not an LS430...some other lexus) and his dvd is in the dash thus VERY easy to exchange versions. My '01 is located in the trunk and it a bit of a challenge to lift enough to insert disk.

Actually, its plug and play according to a few members who've made the jump from gen3 to gen4's. They are also in the same place, my '04 has the DVD in the trunk. Its just a matter of finding a gen4 drive, and plugging it in from what I have gathered.

Greetings, this is just what happen to me, do you know of a solution? Thanks in advance.

It allows you to set\change your destination or other NAV functions while your car is in motion..

If you purchase the ultimate Lockpick it will do that as well as allow you to dial your phone and watch DVD movies on your NAV screen.. while you are driving.. NOT Recommended but it sure is cool...

This maybe covered in another thread but, How do you know what version of Nav I have? I would like to get newer maps. Is the installation pretty simple? Something I could do myself? How do I know which disk to buy if I go the ebay route versus the dealer route. I have an 01 Ultra Lux

I've been trying to help my dad out with that on his 03' LS430. I'm quite confused on what to do.

So, the ultimate lockpick only works with the '04 and up LS?
