Default LS 430 brake noise?

Hello -

I am the proud new owner of a 2005 LS 430 and I'm glad to be a part of this forum. I have joined similar forums in the past and they have proven to be extremely valuable, so I look forward to participating here.

I do have to start out with a question though. In my car, I noticed that when I am in drive and I slowly take my foot off of the break and begin to roll, I hear a bit of a grinding noise. It sounds louder than normal. I'm sure it is the friction that is remaining by the brakes but could it be something else? and has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Regards,
Darin

First of all, a big welcome to clublexus on behalf of our members. Glad to have you join us in our corner of the Internet, and look forward to your participation.

About this particular issue... well i hear some noise when i let of my foot after the brake at stop lights, but nothing excessive. How many miles are on the car? do you know if they are OEM pads on there? I've noticed OEM is usually the best out there. Try and ask the previous owner, or check service records.

Also, you tend to hear this noise after a car wash? or a heavy rain storm? Because lots of my friends complain about brake noise after getting a new car, then I noticed thats when people wash their cars the most (Have to admit thats true, kinda like when you first get married ). And they only notice the noise when its there after a car wash, and they forget to check after the car has been driven for a long time.

So define excessive if you will as well as you can. Can people in surrounding cars hear it for example?
Also, can you check if the pads have been changed recently? either by asking the owner, or checking service records. I hightly recommend OEM pads... they seem to work the best, with the least noise, or dust issues.

Welcome to the Clublexus forums!
Don't forget to join the Clublexus Folding@Home team!

This might sound silly, but try getting upto speed on a very open very straight road and just get on the brakes relatively hard. I've heard that sometimes that can help clean up some gunk which can cause odd noises.

If that doesn't work, you can try to ask your dealer to put some anti-squel grease on the pads.

Thanks for the quick response as well as the welcome wishes. My car has 17,400 miles on it so I imagine that the breaks are original. I bought the car from a dealer and it is very very clean. The original owner purchased the car from the same dealer so I can check with them regarding the service records.

In all fairness, my question might be a bit premature. I brought the car home last Monday night and have not driven it very much since then (thanks to a water leak in front of my house that the city wants nothing to do with :-(. They cleaned washed the car before I took it home so maybe there is some soap residue left over that might wear off. I will have to drive it some more to see if it goes away (as one user "vraa" suggested. I was just wondering if anything obvious came to mind. It seems pretty loud from the inside of the car. Not sure if other cars can hear it but it was loud enough to wear it raised a little flag in my mind.

You shouldn't be hearing any brake noise what so ever.

Since you say it's a little loud, I'm guessing it's squealing. You need new brakes (99% of the time).

On my X5 the first set of pads and rotors went at 15k miles. I guess some cars just have bad luck.

Mine made a popping noise when relasing the brake pedal, not a grinding noise on my 2002 LS 430. If you have a grinding noise, have the dealer look at it. That wouldn't be normal.

Mine makes a rubbing noise right when I take my foot off of the pedal from a stop when I am in drive. I'm almost sure it's the pads, the guy who I bought the car off just replaced them before he sold it and they may not be OEM or quality pads.

Pad squealing (if it is, indeed, the problem) is likely from insufficient anti-squeal grease on the brake pad shims. Also, whenever you replace the pads, you are supposed to replace the shims (which cost as much as the pads). The shim kits come with a packet of the special high temp disc brake grease. Alternatively, you can buy this grease for like $2 at your auto parts shop. There are specific surfaces on the shims on which to apply this grease. They are described in the factory service manual. I'm guessing maybe your grease is drying out? If you get a tiny bit of squeal WHILE braking, that is normal. The brakes shouldn't squeal otherwise. After you wash the vehicle, you might get a thin layer of rust on the surface of the rotors, which will wear off the first time you hit the brakes. Often one will hear a little squeal then (regardless of the brand of vehicle).

Thanks for the advice!!! Do you know where I can get OEM pads and shim kit online?
