I know oil type/change intervals is a highly subjective matter, but just curious as to why Mobil 1 every 3k ?
the way i see it, there is never too early to change oil, you use one day and the oil are old already. i agree there might be a point where things get diminishing return, but it's too hard to judge
at least financially i think it's ok so hopefully that's fine
I typically use Mobil 1, however i am intrested in seeing if Royal purple creates any type of diffrence in preformance. I also use Z-MAX Engine treatments with evrey oil change. Any one notice any diffrences between Mobil and RP?

the Oil companies love those doing the 3K changes,,
since when has any engine failed under normal driving these days due to an oil related problem of going beyond the 3K,, with BMW and Mercedes heading toward the 15 and 20K oil change I would think that should prove they are not interested in any waranty claims due to lack of oil changes and related failures,,

Most maintance items don't make any differences for a modern cars under 100k miles, it is when you want to keep the car running beyond that, it makes the difference.
Go find a good running motor with 250k miles, I bet you the oil was changed every 3k.
Go find a blown motor with only 120k miles, I am sure the oil was changed every 20k.
It all depends on how long you want it to run. If you can afford to get a new car every 100k miles, then you don't have to change the oil.

no additives for me, I heard somewhere that for newer Lexus cars, additives are just bad for them.
I can't remember where. But I just make sure I change my oil every 3000-4000 miles or 4 months.

That said, I use synthetic in all my cars because I'm a sucker for the false feeling of security, and partly because I do believe it is a bit more forgiving on my two turbo cars. I do know this though -- if you are chosing between synthetic and long change intervals vs. regular and short change intervals, I'd choose the short change intervals. Definitely.
My preference would be 5w-30. I prefer a slightly thicker oil. Being in Virginia you are a colder climate than here in Houston though so ) weight is ok. A full synthetic gives me piece of mind. My brothers f150 ran kendall no name oil its entire life and has 185,000 miles and doesent burn oil yet. Engineers at my fathers oil company tell me keeping oil clean is more important than changing it. They run diesels on rigs for 10 years continuously on basic oil and change fluids only every few months.
