Getting amplifier power to trunk without puncturing existing firewall grommets
I need to run a 4 gauge wire through the firewall to power an audio system. This post gives a lot of super helpful detail, but I'm not thrilled about the idea of puncturing that big passenger side firewall grommet. The risk of damaging wires seems high, and I'm skeptical that resealing with caulk, etc. will give a tight and lasting seal.
Is there any confirmed safe and easy place to drill through the firewall, where I can add my own grommet? Pics would be really helpful, as would part recommendations for a new grommet.
You’re probably more likely to do damage by drilling through the firewall. I used that same nipple on the same grommet to run my 4ga wire as seen HERE . No need to reinvent the wheel, that is the spot you want.
Thanks, maybe it was just the camera angle in the other post but I thought they went in closer to the edge. That location in your post does look reasonable.
@JaySco reading through your post some more, how is your setup looking now? Do you still have the deck-mounted ported box? I was wondering if you ever tried aiming your free-standing box through the deck instead of backwards? I want to use my ski pass-through so an easily removable box would be my preference, even though I understand IB is great for deep bass.
The pics on that other thread must be at a weird angle or something because it does indeed look closer to the edge but it’s the same spot.
I’m still running the same setup and loving it (although at times I think a 10” would be nice). I never turned my free standing boxes around to fire toward the opening simply because that hasn’t worked for me in the past, and since my back seat gets used frequently I didn’t want to rely on keeping that spot open to have good sound. The proper way to do that would be to build a pass-through design box but then you’re talking about basically taking up most of the trunk. As stated in that thread I liked the way it sounded in the car but the amount of sound on the outside of the car just wasn’t for me. Maybe it’ll be ok for you, not sure what your priorities are. I know IB setups sound great but I personally have no experience with them, all I know is you really need to know what you’re doing (which I don’t).
