Default Factory sub replacement problem

just replaced my old ML sub with a Dayton 8in dvc sub and I’m aware that your supposed to wire a positive and a negative from each side to get 8ohms to pair with the amp. When wiring the one side in series and reading the other two terminals with a multimeter I got 12 ohms? could this be because i’ve got two extra terminals on each side (8 in total). Every youtube video i’ve seen on replacing the oem sun was with a polk audio sub and it only had 4 terminals in total.

thanks for the help

That sub is 8+8 ohms (printed on the sub) so you'll either be running it at 16 or 4 ohms. DC resistance rating is 3.2 ohms so 6.4 per coil, in series about what you measured.

edit - there are 4 terminals with 4 facing outward to accommodate smaller enclosures/spaces. There are not 4 separate circuits.

They Dayton Sub will read 12 Ohms on a multimeter with the coils wired in series because that is the coils DC resistance.
To get 16 Ohms you will need to use an Audio Impedance tester. Impedance is the AC "resistance" and varies with frequency.

So am I ok to run the speaker like this or do I run the risk of ruining the amp? at times it sounds like the speaker is blown when the volume is higher but it depends on the song

Yes, but go easy on the Dayton sub initially as it needs to be broken in.
Initially they sound a bit loud but once bedded in they seem to match the ML system well.
I've had mine for 3 years now and very happy with it.

The amp can handle down to 8 Ohms on the sub channel but it is happier with 16 Ohms.
If you fit a 4 Ohm sub it overloads the Amp and can blow it.

What is the impedance of the original sub?

On the Mark Levinson system, 16 Ohms.
Not sure on the Pioneer systems.

16 ohms is unusual wonder why they went that direction.

4 Ohm and 2 Ohm subs are for high power systems where you need to get more current through the wires to get the output power.
On the ML system the Sub channel is I believe 60W so only 2Amps needed at full power.
The LS is so quiet it just doesn't need huge amounts of power. :-)

The Mark Levinson system is a "HiFi" system so designed for accurate reproduction rather than thumping bass at deafening levels.

I can print the two piece adapter for $20.00 delivered in 48 states. This makes the Dayton speaker a drop-in and no holes to drill. Please PM if interested.

Nice one. 😁
I used the original bracket and just Dremeled away some of the plastic, then edged the bracket with draught excluder to cushion the speaker.
3 years on and still happy with the Dayton.
