Default What is a 'snap ring' ?

There is one at the end of the steering wheel shaft right before the steering wheel mounts...(45201B).. My steering wheel has up & down play and just wondering if this 'snap ring' is a bearing of some sort ?

A snap ring is not a bearing, it's a ring that fits into a groove generally used around shafts to keep an assembly whatever that may be from sliding on the shaft, keeps it in place, a machined groove on the shaft that the ring snaps into place in, keeps it in place basically. Removal of the ring or rings with a snap ring tool and generally things slide off the shaft. I doubt it's an issue with the ring itself, unless you are missing the snap ring..and there is no snap-ring there..

I see thank you.. i have an annoying amount of up & down play when you hold the steering wheel.. the bush in the sub assy must be worn... right at the end of the steering shaft is a snap ring but i now know thats not the problem.

Also FYI there are various types of pliers designed to be able to remove/install snap rings (aka “retaining rings”).

Notice how some expand as you squeeze, while others contract as you squeeze (and some are adjustable to be able to expand or contract as you squeeze).
