Default UBER RARE Woodgrain Steering Wheel w/E-Shift

EDIT: My interior is tan and I am not converting to black.

Hey guys, just got my rare woodgrain/tan leather with e-shift buttons in for my 98 GS400 from Japan! Super excited to get it on, but first I need a matching airbag. Now I had done the research and know that an RX300 single stage airbag is a direct swap. HOWEVER, I failed to take into account that most of the threads on this topic references a BLACK wheel/airbag. The 01-03 RX300 only comes in tan (like really tan) and black...

So now I basically need help finding an airbag that will match my wheel. If you look at the pic, it looks like it could be grey in color. I swear I have a hard time differentiating between the tan and the grey (see my old thread :P).

I also need to take take into account that any airbag, other than the 01-03 RX300 airbag, will have different distances between the bolts that hold the primer/explosion unit/ whatever the correct term is.

HELP!!!!

Just get a tan bag and dye it black. Seen a few guys on here dye their entire interior with no problems and looks just as good as stock. I questioned specifically about the dye bleeding, the guy said he had it done for 3 years with no bleed.

Well then I'm just lost as to why you'd purchase a black steering wheel...

The one I bought is not black lol. It's supposed to be a "tan" wheel that matches my dash color. The one in the pic is not black.

Just find the leather horn that matches and swap the guts from the compatable (to car) bag. The little hocky puck metal actual exploding bag with appriate phase l or ll plugs into the horn that is matching tan color. That's what I did with my cherry wood wheel from an ES. Member "5t341th" did a pretty detailed write up.

Yea I see his thread (link below for those interested). Correct me if I am wrong, but these would be the steps I need to take:

Pull my wheel off my 98 GS400
Measure the distance between the holes of my single stage explosion unit
Go find an airbag that matches in color (any suggestions on which models would be a color match besides the RX?)
Make sure that the bolts are spaced the same distance apart as the holes on my single stage explosion unit so that it lines up correctly
Swap out the dual stage for my single stage
Reinstall!

Why can't an 01+ 2GS airbag work again? I can't just swap out the explosion unit from my GS400 to an 01+ bag? Or somehow find an 01+ 2GS airbag that has the single stage plug? All the "01+ GS300 Airbags" I'm seeing on ebay all seem to be single stage. They only have one connector? Am I missing something cause I was reading old threads about how only some older 01 models had single stage...

It doesn't have to be a lexus igniter, it can be any toyota. There are really only two main sizes of igniters for them, it's easy to find an igniter from another toyota/lexus model in either single or dual stage that will fit whatever airbag you get.

Just get whatever airbag that fits your wheel and is the right color you want. And if your current igniter is the wrong size to bolt into the bag post a pic of the bag you are going to use and if you need a single or dual igniter and I can link you to a proper one to buy or I have a few also and may have one that works for you. It's easy stuff. You can PM me if you like as well and I can help you out..

Tried and failed to get the airbag off today. I disconnected the battery, waited 15 min, propped the plastic covers off, used a t30 screwdriver, and nothing. The bolts did not budge AT ALL. Any suggestions before I give it another go tomorrow?

Ive seen many 1998 through 2005 air bags for the GS and have yet to come across a dual stage airbag. I know they are out there but I have yet to see one.

I couldnt imagine trying that with just a screwdriver. You could maybe try gloves for better grip, or smacking the end of the screwdriver to shock it. I used a T30 bit with a ratchet to
break them loose with no problem

GS400V8 is right those bolts are pretty tight, hand gripping a screwdriver may prove much to difficult, maybe put some channellocks on the driver handle to get some torque and leverage if you don't have a socket available. But yeah a 3/8" ratchet and torx socket is what you would normally use to get them out.
