I've done it two ways.
On my 2000 I bought cheap assemblies online and put them in. Real easy but lost some ride quality on my 2000 #TexasLexus.
On my 99 #Butter I bought super cheap cartridges and mounts. Swapped those in to the original springs and the ride is very good.
So it's a trade off between easier work or better ride in my opinion. For me, the extra work is worth it for the better ride.

Replaced my fronts with OEM parts, wouldnt recommend anything other... it transformed the ride.
Will be replacing the rears this year.
parts.com has good prices on the shocks, I also bought the front strut rods from there as well.

Why don't you just upgrade all four shocks to Bilstein's? One of my Ls400's I just upgraded to Bilsteins with Eibach springs. The ride height is a little lower but the ride difference was amazing before and after.

Also how much of a drop did those springs give you.

The first time I replaced my struts (MY1998) was at 160K miles and I went with OEM KYB. Those failed after 50K miles and I recently replaced them with Bilsteins (still have original springs), since that's what I have on all of my other vehicles and I've been happy with them.
However the ride is definitely firmer, which I'm still trying to get used to. I'm hoping they soften up a bit with time. Bilsteins are half the price of OEM and will last forever (they come with a lifetime warranty), but the savings vs. stock ride decision is a personal choice to make.

Wow, really? The OEM was twice as much? What is OEM, KYB? I buy all my parts from a local business, OEM and really good prices. I think I ended up paying a little under $1,000 for just 4 struts. The KYB's were well over 1000....

I personally would go with bilsteins. they will feel a bit stiffer I'm sure compared to OEM but that's bc I feel the car is soft (by design I know).
billy, if you want that original feel and money is not an object, then OEM shocks are your choice. OEMs will be pricey as stated.
I believe the OEM shocks are made by either KYB or tokico anyway, but are valved for the LS400 specifically.
