1995 ls 400 cranks, but will not start
Was given a 95 LS 400. I have some automotive experience, and have found no spark coming from either distributor coils. Coil wires test good. Any advice appreciated...

I would check fuses, but I am not one to tell you which ones. I would also make sure to disconnect the negative battery terminal for a few minutes and reconnect before trying to start it. If you disconnect anything electrical on a Lexus you have to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery. Otherwise, you will get bad ghostly things occurring. I consider it mandatory. Your donor may have been disconnecting lots of things before your ownership, so I would start be disconnecting the battery. Almost forgot. Do you have a key that is broken? The key fob built into the key? The key fob must be in the very close proximity of the ignition or the security will cause a no start situation.

Hi Michael,
Sorry, forgot to mention, I did check the fuses. #8 10A MIR-HTR, #10 20A HLP R UPR, #11 10A HLP L UPR, #12 10A HLP L LWR, & #13 10A HLP R LWR are blown. also relays?? 40A H/CTRL, & 30A ABS#2 are missing. Key fob is on the key chain, not on the key and works fine. Do you know how to test the ignition coils?
Thanks for the reply

I cracked my first key fob and began having intermittent start issues. I started using the second key, until it broke off in my hand while to starting the car. I dug up the valet key and it started on the first try. However, I did have some coolant temperature sensor issues, and not resetting the computer issues. I will go outside and try to start my car with my broken key fob, now that I have fixed the other issues. I will let you know if it is a no start situation, but my previous attempts having the broken key fob on the chain isn't close enough. I do not know how to test the coils, but a key fob security breach might be cutting off your coils.

So, I just walked outside and tried to start my 98 with a broken key fob and the fob right up against the key. It cranked and would not turn over. I put the valet key in the ignition instead and it fired right up. Do you have another key? Valet key might be in the glove box. If not I would say you are looking at $130 key replacements. This is a known problem and they actually make reinforced keys now. I certainly wouldn't spend $100 on something else, until you have a key that is intact.

When I am saying broken .... I mean broke off...... not to be confused with the lock/unlock etc. aren't working. There is a proximity magnet of some sorts in the plastic housing, and if you try starting the car just with the metal key and the housing is broken. It won't start.
