Default I just discovered the worlds best kept secret! - It's called the LS400!

Hello all, I'm new to this forum. I knew noting about the LS400 until my friend who owns a 1997 LS400 took me on a road trip. I was very impressed with everything about the car, features, comfort, power etc. Then he told me the number of miles on the odometer was 230k! He said it got there with very few maintenance issues. I was blown away. Did some research and found that the LS400 is legendary when it comes to how reliable they are. Just purchased my first LS 400 a couple days ago - a 1995 LS400 with 99k miles on it. For these cars thats like new!

Needless to say I'm very excited about owning this car!

Nice car! Keep that interior in in as good a shape as possible. Black interior isnt very common.

wow looks nice! that black leather is pretty rare to find. Most are tan like mine on the inside. These cars are great! I've got 286k on mine and it still rides and shifts as smooth as ever and has plenty of power.

Are you referring to the timing belt and water pump replacement or something else? I do all my own repair work so for me it comes down to parts cost and time. :-)

Congrats on the find and welcome to the club. Read through the forum and try to catch up. Most of us have known this secret for years. Pay special attention to the capacitor issues on the ECU for this model year. Hope the car lasts you another 200k.

great find and wow black on black! looks like a well maintained car and yes the timing belt is really the only major job that needs to be done, and that's just maintenance not really a catastrophic problem.

be sure to check out the FAQ for more! are you in socal or norcal?

When you get ready to change your timing belt, follow my DIY. It will match your car to a ‘T.’

I'll disagree with this, for those that do their own work. In 10 years and ~40k on my '91 (from ~160k to 197k now), the single most costly repair I've had was to replace all 4 struts, strut mounts, etc. And that of course was semi-optional. The engine, transmission, differentials, axles, etc. on these cars are great and should just require good maintenance.

The original owner, my father in law, would regularly drop $4k on it in repairs+maintenance, but that was because he'd take it to the dealer and have them do everything they wanted.

Car looks great, BTW.

Nice looking car . Dont worry. for us diy:ers these are really nice relaible vehicles. No reliability issues after some initial stuff to fix when I bougth it cheap.
I have been using my 1995 for 4 years now as a DD mostly and spent a whopping 15$ on repairs when windscreen washer pump went.
I did replace some ignition stuff after 22 years because it felt about time but there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. Stil keep the old stuff as backup.
The big work things like cambelt or starter are every 10 years or so hence ok if you do not mind a little work on a fine Vehicle,
Also insurance is cheap . I pay 160$ per year (Sweden).

A very nice looking car if I may say so! (Of course, we're too polite to ask what you paid for it )

Mind you, a black car with black interior in California - I hope your air works well!

These things have been known to do a million miles. My only advice (in addition to what's already been given) is to always use genuine parts, and if you ever change the transmission fluid, do not consider anything other than Toyota Type IV.

Good luck,

Rich

Black looks so nice, can be a tough color to deal with sometimes, but this looks nice. Low miles, pretty crazy find.

Wow, what a great find, congrats! The paint is so shiny it is amazing. And the interior is very nice too. I would buy some seat covers to protect the leather on the seats.
The only really tough job on this car is replacing the starter, everything else is more or less doable, depending on your skill level and persistence.
