Default New LS400 Owner, Strange Navi Problem

Hey everyone, I just picked up a 2000 LS400 for a steal of a price, it needs some work granted, but overall it is in decent shape, mechanically. I have been slowly fixing it up but one issue is just completely beyond me and I can't seem to find anything on any of the forums about it. The navigation module, or unit, in the trunk makes a whirring sound when i turn the ignition on. This sound lasts for about 1 minute then goes away. The radio and everything works, but the navigation screen does not. When i select maps or navigation I get a Insert Hard disk message, not sure if this is related to the strange whirring sound I am hearing from the unit in the trunk. I wouldn't mind disconnecting the unit and not having navi at all since its so dates, but when i disconnect the unit I can use the radio or anything, so that's a problem.... Anyone know what could be causing this strange noise to happen?

The whirring in the trunk is the hard disk. Maybe remove it and see if something got disconnected.
