ES 300 2002 having weird problem with navigation screen
I sincerely hope that someone will be able to help me out with this problem.
Since two weeks or so, as soon as I turn off the car, the navigation screen goes into the loop of opening and closing.
If I move the key all the way to the right, its stops (either in open or close position) doing this.
I traced it down to a point between 'ACC' and 'Start' positions where this thing starts to happen.
The navigation system itself is working fine and so is the car otherwise.
Please help !!

sounds like the navi unit does not know whether the car is on or off so it loops around. hmmm, connection problem of some sort? i'd take the navi unit out and just check/clean the connections. also, is there a reset procedure for the unit itself?

Thanks for responding rlx101. Yes, seems like a connection issue and happens only when car is turned completely off.
Also, the navigation system does not come on, its just the screen that starts this open/close cycle. I have already reset the system (disconnected the battery for two hours) and it did not work.
I would love to clean the connections, but have never done something like this before, so don't know where to start.

Great video rlx101. Thanks very much. I was able to take the navigation unit out.
Went to the dealer today and he quoted $1068. That's not going to happen.
My plan is to simply disconnect the motor that causes the screen to open, effectively disabling the open/tilt/close functionality.

lol forget about dealer. you can get a take off unit on ebay for around 300$ if you wish to. or get a brand new aftermarket for much less than they are asking. are they outta their mind, 10 year old navigation unit for 1000$? greedy bastards.
back to business. so normally, when you turn the key, what happens? does it go to some pre-set position? i'd look into pins in the back of the unit, also may be there is a fuse somewhere that went..? it must be getting a signal from when the key is turned and that signal is messed up somehow- short, fuse, poor connection or unit itself has a problem.. id find the pin that connects to the ignition and check the voltage when the key is turned. if that checks out - unit itself may have a problem.

To me, the unit developed a problem.
Disassembled the unit by taking out CD and tape module, disconnected the motor and put everything back. Everything is working fine. Job done.
Thanks very much for your help. Your video made it possible for me.

Hey great job! just to be clear - thats not my video, i found it on youtube, yes its pretty helpful. I agree, the process is pretty easy, compared to other cars i've had in the past.
Im thinking about replacing the stock stereo myself on this car after seeing aftermarket wiring harness finally appear on ebay for about 10$. I already have a ML faceplate for double din unit.
