Backup camera question (Or, How to hook up to reverse wire)
Ok, so here's my problem. Btw, I did some searching, like one is supposed to do, but didn't find much info on my exact problem, though there is a fair amount of general backup camera talk to be found on here.
I just had a friend help me with installing a Pioneer 2 din head unit in my 1997 LS400. The installation went fairly well, until we got to the backup camera I had bought. We realized that the head unit needs to be connected to the reverse somehow to turn on automatically and show the camera when reverse is selected, not just the camera, as I had originally thought. Since we wanted to avoid running wires back to the trunk, I got a wireless setup for the camera, and because of this we really don't want to run a wire from the head unit to the reverse lights. So my question is, then, what is the most convenient place to hook up to the reverse wire (or whatever it is called) from the head unit? I saw some talk about the ECU behind the glovebox, how would one hook up to this if so? Any input is appreciated!
Thanks.
Jan.

Can you tap into the reverse light wire somewhere? It's easy to find it in the trunk, but that's exactly what you don't want to do, so maybe you can find the same wire closer to the engine?

Yeah, that's what I was hoping to find out - where the easiest place to tap into it was. However, my mechanic friend said he found some good wiring diagrams today, so hopefully he'll be able to figure it out!

I am writing this from the future (2019) as I just installed a Hizpo Android 8.1 Head Unit in my 1991 LS400. The Best Invention I Did Not Know About goes to the Video Coax cable with ONE EXTRA non-coax signal wire BUILT INTO IT! This came with my Hizpo because I ordered it in a package that included a BACK-UP CAMERA. You have to pull this wire somehow all the way through the car but then I just PLUGGED IN the RCA to the CAM-IN on the Hizpo, and ran the extra signal to the BACK (name on the tagged wire) or CAM-LINE (name on the sticker on the Hizpo) [Grrrr there is a lot of frustration like this signal naming ambiguity with Hizpo].
In the TRUNK of the car, I powered the backup cam from the "back-up light" that goes on when you put the car in reverse. THEN ALSO connect the power to that extra signal line in the coax-plus-one red pigtail. And IT JUST WORKED! Put it in reverse, the Hizpo switches to rear camera!
I was worried that the backup light would be controlled by switching the ground, not switching the + but that was a waste of time to worry! Guess my age is showing!
Hope I can attach a pic to help. Note NOT THAT RELEVANT TO THE ORIGINAL POSTERS SITUATION since he was using a WIRELESS camera to avoid having to route the wire from trunk to dash.
Darn I cannot attach a pic, it suddenly stops at 50% with no clue why!
