Default Transmission pump or power steering pump whining?

While refilling the cooling system after fixing a leak on my '99 I noticed this whining noise. After some researching, I've come to the conclusion that it is either the transmission pump, meaning I need to do a drain and fill along with replacing the filter/strainer, or the power steering pump is going out. If it is the transmission pump, is the WIX kit from O'reilly a suitable replacement part? Here is a video of the noise...

Take the serp belt off and see if it stops.

I may just go ahead and change the filter this weekend, I'm sure at 131k it couldn't hurt. Do I need to go OEM for the filter and gasket or would one from the parts house work? This WIX kit is only $28, plus whatever fluids I need. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...0073&ppt=C0338

Turn the steering wheel and see what happens, then put in gear, listen. Just sounds like a nice turbo will make others jealous.

Yes, I would do that. That will definitely let you know whether it's the PS Pump or something else.

Regarding the AT filter, as I remember doing it for my '91, it is actually more of a screen than a filter. So as well as replacing that, I put in an in-line Magnefine filter on one of the lines to the AT Oil cooler built in to the radiator.

Which kind of belt tensioner do these cars have? The GS300 I did an alternator on had the spring loaded kind, does the LS have that type or is it just the one where you loosen the bolt?

It's spring loaded with a left hand thread. 14mm socket and pull it counter clock wise to release tension.

The noise might be the bearing on the belt tensioner going out. I had the same noise and I replaced the bearing, it fixed the noise. I almost replaced the steering pump, I thought it was low fluid and screaming for fluid.Check Bearing on idler also.!994 LS400. Good Luck

Bad tensioners can make noises similar to this. I had a couple of Chevrolets that needed tensioners. With 131K, a bad tensioner wouldn't be a crazy cause for this. It's certainly an easier fix than the PS pump (been there, done that). The transmission fluid change is good maintenance, but check that tensioner. If that's it, before too long you'll get this loud screaming sound when you turn the wheel. When you drop your kids off in front of the school, that's your car telling the whole daggum town about your financial problems.
