Default Power steering pump

Guys, my power steering pump stopped working two months ago. It started whining really badly so I replaced it with an after market pump from Autozone. I used transmission fluid instead of conventional ps fluid. The noise went away and everything was good. A couple weeks ago the whining returned. It started in the morning as the car was warming up. Now it's lasting even after the car is warm. The fluid is not low or leaking. What would cause the noise to return? Please help me out. I despise my car making abnormal noises.

Usually the screens inside of the pump get clogged with debris that was in the system from the old pump especially if you didn't flush the system before you put the new pump on. Once it starts get clogged it causes a restriction in flow so you get the whining noise.

Did you clean the reservoir screen? Mine was completely clogged with a nice 1/2 " glaze that I had to blast out with BB's and acetone.

Why Transmission fluid? I'm not sure how your rack is going to respond to ATF... However, I've just never heard of anyone doing that.

The manual originally specified to use ATF Dexron II.

If I were to take the pump off and start the process over would that help? This time of course cleaning out the screens.

It could help as long as the pump hasn't been damaged again from the lack of flow and debris in the system. Maybe even look into an in line filter.

Ah crap. Guess I'll be starting another thread to see what damage I've done now. Thanks for the reply.

Will this filter help me with my current problem? Or is this something I should look to implement in the future?

It should stop any further damage and it will help protect your new pump but I don't know if it will reverse any damage that is already done.

The high pressure ps hose lets leaky with age. When it does, air gets in, air bubbles get into the fluid and ruin your assist. Replace any leaky ps hose, flush the system, and drive that puppy.
