I recently installed a towbar (trailer hitch to our american friends) onto a 1997 LS400. It was sourced from a wrecked 1996 LS400.
The bar in question has two struts running towards the front of the car around 50cm long with bolt points at the end. Unfortunately, my car doesn't have anything to attach to these points. I'm wondering if there was a difference in attachment between the 96 and 97 models or these were added extra bracing by whoever manufactured the towbar. None of the images I've sourced on the internet for this model towbar appears to have the struts mine does. Aside from these two extra struts the bar fits perfectly.
Just looking for feedback on whether anyone else has these extra struts attached. I'm picking that it's just additional, albeit not absolutely necessary bracing. Keen on feedback from the group.
If I'm thinking about this right, those extra struts are required for towing in Australia. Something called "Hayman-Reese hitch" or something like that. Did you check how it was mounted to the other car?
Thanks for that. I'm in New Zealand so the requirement may be the same. I've asked the seller to take a photo of the underside of their car so that I can compare. Will update once I've received the pics.
