humming noise at idle + air cond
Greetings,
I am a new member with a 98' LS 400 with 250k mi.
Purchased it when it had only 25k mi.
Has no major issues with it for many years.
Maintaining regular oil changes and services.
Body, paint and interior are still good.
The car is an excellent cruiser on long trips.
Recently, it develops a disturbing humming noise at start and idle.
It's get louder if air cond is on.
Feels like it comes from the transmission.
But the car experiences no slipping gear....no loss of performance...no loss of transmission fluid.
Mechanics told me a rebuilt or used transmission needed.
Cost ranging from $2000, $1600 to $1100 for rebuilt or used one.
Other mechanic says it only needs a torque converter costing $200 parts and $450 labor.
Need advices on which way to proceed: replace transmission or just torque converter?
Thank you.

Have you ever replaced the engine mounts and the transmission mount?
Worn out mounts tend to make unusually big humming noise causing a resonance with the engine and the body.
