Default Exhaust smell in the cabin ('90 LS400, 160k)

I used to have the "check engine" light on intermittently for months now. A few weeks ago, I replaced the EGR modulator (cleaning it did nothing), and the light never came back on. Also, my MPG improved a bit.

However, now for a few days in a row, I have been feeling some exhaust smell in the car, even if I put the vents on "recirculate". What would be the most likely culprit - EGR pipe probably? I don't have the "check engine" light on, and I thought it would come on if the pipe broke... Since I have not replaced my engine mounts yet even though I have the OEMs sitting right here, (too much to do, too little time), I suspect that all that stress and vibrations finally did a number to the EGR pipe.

Should I just order a new pipe, and have it replaced? I mean, I never heard of the exhaust going bad on these babies... but everyone seems to have had the EGR pipe break at least once.

I guess I am trying to see if anyone else had the smell in the cabin due to broken EGR pipe...
Anyone?
Anyone?

It's your capacitors! You should change those!

no, it is likely your lower EGR pipe, look in the crinkled part in the bend of the pipe, that is where they crack, and you would definitely smell exhaust fumes, as the fresh air intake is just 18 inches or so above this pipe!

the replacement Toyota part is about $100 if you shop it online, and it is no fun to install!

also if you use a piece of vacuum hose, you can put it down by the crinkled part and listen and hear it leaking, that is what we done on my 97... I assume you know to put the other end up to your ear... smiles.

thanx for replies everyone.

Funny thing is that if I switch to fresh air on the HVAC, I get much less exhaust smell (almost none when its cold), but on recirculate it is actually worse! I thought recirculate would block it all off.

Thanks LScowboy. I could not find a better price either.
Funny thing is, I only get that exhaust smell on a warmer day, but when it is cold, there is no smell... weird.
