Could anyone here tell me if I can replace my 89661-50170 with the 89661-50171? If I read the post right it should work but since I would be actually spending money to acquire the other part (50171) I really would like some additional comfort if at all possible
Thanks in advance
Yes, if it's for a Celsior manufactured between August 92 - Oct 94. But remember that those QAS capacitors are already at the end of the life and those are mostly needed to replace.
Hi Yamae, well I bought the 89661-50171 from ebay but I don't think its a good one because although the car now starts and runs without any error lights (in the garage) there are large drops of raw gas coming out of both exhausts and its still smoking a little plus lots of gas smell all around. I don't want to drive it anywhere with that sort of problem.
Do you think it really is the ECU or maybe something else I don't know about?
If it is do you have any knowledge or pointers of where I can buy another ECU because there are none on ebay any more.
It's not easy to find a good ECU any more judging from the age. To check the ripple level is one idea to know the condition of the ECU. You can find the method at the FAQ page.
Anyway I recommend you to replace all the QAS capacitors because those capacitors are more than 20 years old and seldom to keep the good condition.
Thanks for your quick response Yamae but that ripple level test seems to need a scope and it is beyond me lol.
I opened the ECU and all the caps seem in perfect condition (not even close to swollen or leaking). Well I get the impression you do think the problem is with the ECU and not something else so if you hear of any for sale please let me know. I'd hate to scrap the car if there is still a chance to fix it.
I'm open to any other suggestions or pointers you may have and thanks a whole lot for your help so far!
Hi again Yamae, I see you have a lot of highly respected posts on here. I have been researching your posts regarding replacing the capacitors and have found they are very difficult to get the correct ones and the job itself seems very technical to do right.
Can you recommend a place where I can send my ECU to get the caps replaced correctly? It could be in Japan or anywhere else. I think that would be a much better option than trying to do the job here in Trinidad, West Indies where I actually live.
