Approaching 180K in my '97; would like input on maintenance please
As the title states, the 'ol girl is about 700 miles shy of the big 180K, which means it's time to open that pocketbook and dump money into it. I've compiled a list of everything I believe it needs, but if someone could verify the information here as correct, it would be greatly appreciated:
The OEM timing belt kit on eBay
$298
TIMING BELT (MITSOBOSHI)
IDLER#1 (KOYO)
IDLER#2 (KOYO)
HYDRAULIC TENSIONER (Toyota)
FRONT CAM SEALS (x2) (Toyota)
FRONT CRANK SEAL (Toyota)
WATER PUMP (AISIN/ASCO)
ORINGS (x2) (AISIN/ASCO)
WATER PUMP GASKET (AISIN/ASCO)
THERMOSTAT (Toyota)
THERMOSTAT GASKET (Toyota)
DRIVE BELT (BANDO/MITSUBOSHI)
Valve cover gaskets (mine are leaking quite a bit)
$60 (Bidding on an OEM set on eBay right now...hopefully can snag for less)
Part number: 11213-50021 (x2)
Gasket, spark plug tube (x8)
Part number: 11193-15010
$7.52/each
Grommet, valve cover gasket (x8):
Part number: 90210-07001
$2.03/each
Transmission drain/refill w/ Toyota Type IV ATF:
$30 @ $10/quart (If I've read correctly, a drain/fill takes about 2.5qt)
Drain/replace differential fluid (has never been done)
Mobil 1 75w-90 synthetic
$30/2 qts
NGK TE119 spark plug wires (spark plugs replaced in November)
$75
While it's apart, I'm also having him clean the throttle body.
Am I leaving anything out?
The 90K maintenance was performed at a Toyota dealership in 2007. The invoice simply read:
Timing belt
water pump
transmission flush
coolant flush
tune up
That ran me $1,087.49 out the door. I've got an independent mechanic who I trust to do the work who only charges $50/labor. He gave me a rough estimate of $840/labor (assuming it was a 14 hour job). The part prices listed above, save for the gear oil, plug wires and timing belt kit were from Lexuspartsnow, so they're just estimates as I'm sure I can shop around to find those parts cheaper.
Input is greatly appreciated!

I'll check around for better prices on the ATF.
The P/S pump and high pressure line were replaced in November due to a leak (which also meant I got a new alternator as well). Just had new strut rod bushings replaced as well with OEM units; trans mount seemed just fine.

If you want to really do the tranny fluid change, it'll take something like 8qts and a flush machine. I know on the 4Runner I have, I can disconnect one of the transmission lines at the radiator, run the engine, let it pump out about 2qts, top off the transmission, and keep doing that to flush everything including the torque converter. Can you do the same thing on the LS400's?

Overquoted? LOL ...FAR less than what a Dealer or typical indie shop would charge. If he searched... could he find someone to do it for less? Sure possible.. but I would never go as far as to use the term "overquoted".

unless you have been draining the tranny fluid and replacing every year or two, just do a drain and fill (roughly 3 qts.) so that the new fluid is introduced gracefully over time. Do this each year and you can do your full flush after 2 or 3 drain & fills at the drain plug over a couple of years.

I betcha your transmission mount is broken!
on the distributor caps and rotors SRMLS mentioned, DEFINITELY have him do them while he is in there, practically no extra labor, and make sure to use the real NipponDenso parts from a dealership.

Plus 1 on the transmission mount...
I've just replaced them on a 99 and 2000 with about 145K on each of them...
Both were broken and separated from the metal...pretty much useless.
Easy to replace and highly recommended.

Sorry for the delayed responses...been shooting FD Atlanta back to back with V8 Supercars (and subsequently now sit at 184,000...) so I haven't had time to jump back on here and see what you guys have said.
Trans mount looks good; we checked that when installing the new strut rod bushings. I see it was suggested to replaced the distributors/rotors too...no problem. Can someone confirm these parts for being what I need?
CAP SUB-ASSY, DISTRIBUTOR - 19101-50020 - $20.20
ROTOR SUB-ASSY, DISTRIBUTOR - 19102-50020 - $11.23
I appreciate the feedback!

Just do what is specified for the 180K service in your maintenance manual unless other problems are obvious. Replacing other parts when there is not a problem is a waste of money.
BTW, I replaced the original transmission mount in my 2000 LS400 at 150,000 and found that it still looked like new - no cracking or compression at all. From what I've seen, the engine and transmission mounts wear out faster on southern cars.
