Default Speedo issue

I have seen a few forums on here about this but my issue seems to be a bit different. This part has happened a couple times when i first start driving in the morning. i will be about a mile from the house and my speedo wont be working. one or 2 taps or bumps on the dash and it works and no problems. my second issue is from time to time and its not very often i will look down at the cluster and it appears the lights got brighter as if they were dimmed. all these issues are during the day with lights off. any ideas of help would be helpful. thanks

I had this exact problem on my 96, and as unrelated and crazy as it may seem, the problem turned out to be bad ECU capacitors

Now my speedo is always working right! - No more slapping the dash!

no one I know rebuilds them correctly, they don't use the premium Japanese low-ESR caps that are the correct fix. - the best idea I know is to find a deal on a cheap one at a junkyard or ebay to use while you mail yours off to be fixed properly, if you can find who does it well. - then resell the spare on ebay for what you paid for it.

If you leave out the lower glove compartment, you can swap ECU's in about 5 minutes if you are good with a ratchet!
