Is it my alternator?

PS - the reason is that the battery acts as a giant protective capacitor, and I am with YoshiMan, never do this, wayyy too risky! - This was a fine idea on your 1972 Ford F-100 pickup but not on the LS

Is there a reason no one has suggested testing voltage with a volt meter?
Check voltage with car off and than running and than with lights and fan on and than test in reverse order. The behavior of the voltage will tell you everything you need to know.

correct. (assuming the alternator connections, ground, and associated fuses & fuselinks are good)
I agree! Do not disconnect the batt with the car running. You can send a surge of power to the ECU and fry it or other parts. You can get away with doinig this on an older carb'd car/truck, but I would not suggest it on something like the LS.
