We may be shopping for another LS400 soon. Ours is in the shop and needs service that may be more than I want to spend.

Where there any changes between the 1990 and 1991 model years on the LS400? I know the 1992 models got bigger brakes, different grill, and various other bits.

Have found cars with 160k miles on them for around $4500. Sound reasonable?

 

In other news, the mechanic said that the engine still has a very consistent 175psi compression across all of the cylinders. For an engine with 400k on it. Incredible!

 

IMO I would never buy a 91-94 car with 160k on the clock for $4500.... Unless of course it had next to nothing in miles. Maybe cars are ALOT more expensive where your at, but here in florida you can pick them up all day long for 2-3k with around 100-130k miles. It just seems way to expensive for a car that is 20+ years old. But, like I said thats my opinion. Honestly it really doesn't matter what YOU pay for the car, as long as YOU are happy with it.

 

$4500 is on the steep side for a 1LS (90-94). the car better have a mint exterior and interior, all maintenance done, etc. what is wrong with your current car? 175psi is very good.

Thanks, Drifter. That's the info I needed. We don't like the body styling on the First gen Series II cars as much as the Series I. If I can find one of these cars with low miles (at that age, under 150k), I'm prepared to sink some bucks into it on maintenance (timing belt, full service on A/C system, etc) as we'll keep it till it hits 400k like with our current one.

The current car pretty much needs all the suspension gone through, the A/C compressor is toast and big bucks to fix, and it used to have a random problem with the EFI system where it just wouldn't start. That problem hasn't come back for a couple years, but it's still hanging out there. The differential also has a ton of wear on it and has a bit of a whine to it that goes away when you deaccel. It just needs a lot of things done to it.
