First gear start...
First of all, I was recently browsing MBworld.org forums and came upon an interesting thread:

It seems that this may apply to our cars also. One of the most frustrating things to me is LS's sluggish off the line performance. This is true for a car even in great running shape such as mine. It is extremely quick if I punch it from a 45 mile roll and it downshifts to 2nd but off the line it's a dog. Could it be that most of the time it starts off in 2nd gear? Anyone know?
Thanks
Anton

The early E class MBs (I think 86 to 92 or 93) always started in 2nd gear, even from a dead stop. Only way to avoid this is to floor it on take off.
Having owned both the E class and an LS, the gutlessness of the LS from a dead stop, doesn't even come close to the old E class.
I know that as smooth as the LS is, it is hard to tell if it taking off in 1st or 2nd, however with my modified exhaust it is easy to tell by the sound that it is taking off in 1st gear like it should.
I think the gutlessness the LS from a stop is caused by other factors (gearing, torque converter, etc....).
