Default 1998 LS400 OBD2 Compatibility

Hello all, I got recently CP9125 scanner for my cars, it is not reading any codes for me! always FAIL message. Is there any compatibility issue for 1998 LS400?

Or my car have a problem? Any one is using the CP9125 for 1998-2000 LS400 successfully?

Thanks for reading.

Does the scanner say it is compatible with Lexus vehicles? Certain scanners require a key to decode various manufacturers. My guess would be the scanner is the problem not your vehicle.

It says

"PocketScan Code Reader CP9125 is an easy-to-use tool for novice and light-to-moderate DIY customers. It enables the user to read diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the on-board computers of 1996 and newer OBD II compliant vehicles"

so i thought it would work on 1998 LS400

Should have no problem reading the '98 which is OBD II. Lexus went to CAN sometime after 2001, which requires a reader able to read Car Automotive Network protocol.

Thank you guys for your replies, just got athe below from the manufacturer by email;

" If the vehicle was manufactured for sale in the USA it should work, if outside the US this tool will be hit and miss depending on how the programming is done in the computer. If outside the USA then this is the problem."
And I'm from Kuwait, so that's probably the reason. Just ordered an OBD2 bluetooth thing to use my android as a scanner.

I own ELM327 OBD-II code scanner to use for cars owned by my close friends and my family. It works great for most of the cars even here in Japan but not for a 98 Celsior.

My initial intention was to use it for my 98 Celsior but it was not compatible I found after buying it. I gave up using it for the Celsior but most of Honda cars and some Toyota cars are OK with it and it works as one of good tools for me. I never had any engine check lamp issue on my Celsior so far but when it happened I would use a simple method called TCCS and get the code at the Multi Infornation Display in the cluster.

Toyota must had implemented different system for JDM model of LS400. Due to the American regulation, the LS400 US model must be compatible with OBD-II but the model for the Middle-East might be not the same with US model, I bet.

I have both a real ELM327 as well as a cheap standalone unit and havent had problems with either connecting to any of my USDM LS400s.

Hi Gene.
TCCS stands for "Toyota Computer Controlled System". It is a system related to the "Diagnosis Connector " under the hood. The TCCS generates 2 digits code partly shown below when "Tc" and "E1" are shorted. Sorry for that I only have a Japanese manual.

As you notice TCCS codes are related to SAE / OBD-II codes but due to the limitation of figures 1-99, sometimes they are not good enough to distinguish trouble points. That's why I wanted to buy a code reader which enables to read code starting PXXX ( the left side).

As I investigate more on 98-00 Celsior's compatibility to OBD-II, all you need is to add some protocol to the reader which is implemented in the Toyota genuine "S2000 Code Reader". But the protocol is not open to the public. If I were skillful and smart enough, I could analyze it and make a new program for a general ELM327 code reader.

the reason the NON-US models won't read is because OBDII is a US standard, not required for other markets. Later when CAN became the standard there was a lot more international flexibility

HI, Yamae.
Your reply is, as usual, very thoughtful.
It would be highly interesting to have a S2000 emulator.
I would bet a doughnut that you are both skilfull and smart enough (and I like doughnuts very much :-)
Thanks.

Received the Bluetooth scanner today, again no connection with my 1998 LS400 ECU.

tried it on my XK8 Jaguar and it worked.

So my Lexus is not OBDII compatible.

You probably need a S2000 to read all the codes since your LS400 is not an American model. But without it, you could read the TCCS codes at the cluster without any code scanner but a short jumper wire.
