Default Looking to buy an LS400

I am looking to buy an LS400 in the near future, most likely just one from craigslist, but there's still good ones out there.

I wanted to know the life expectancy of these because I know of some that have well over 200k miles and seem to run fine, but I'm not sure what to be cautious about.

I was wondering if all the 98 models come with the vvti version of the engine, or just certain ones, and if these are really rare or not.

And finally, I was wondering (for all models) how much it would cost to upgrade these cars much. If there are performance chips available, exhausts/intakes or even good turbo kits available,

I was hoping to be able to compete with my friends lightly modded e36 M3, at least in a straight line.

Thanks

You'll NEVER be able to compete with the M3 unless you're dreaming. @00K miles is not a lot if the car was maintained properly. Personally, I think the iol changes for longevity is most important. Use the right oil and change it at %k or sooner and it will run a long time.

Agreed.

If your buddy in the M3 is a decent driver, you won't stand a chance. Intake, Exhaust, and a Jet/Mines ECU ain't going to get you the kind of performance necessary to beat an M3 in a straight line.
