92 nakamichi speakers sound much better than 95 nakamichi speakers
I have a 92 LS400 and my drivers side front speaker blew. I bought some 95 nakamichi speakers from ebay. They do not sound nearly as good (I can do a direct comparison because my right (passenger) front speaker is still the original).
The 95 speaker is not made of cardboard and the foam rim is thicker and it does not have the extra carboard cone in the middle. Just information for all of you who are replacing with original parts. Here are picks of the 2 so you can see the difference.
Speaker on top is the 92 nakamichi speaker speakers on bottom are the 95 nakamichi speakers

The smaller internal cones are called Whizzer cones and serve to focus and increase the output of the speaker at the high end of its range.
My brother has a 1992 LS with the Nakamichi system. I have replaced the foam surrounds on his speakers and they are made of polypropylene not cardboard. They too have the whizzer cones on them. The Pioneer speakers that came on my 1993 LS did not have the whizzer cones and are made of paper.
Check the back of your original speakers and be sure that they are stamped with the word "nakamichi" or the nakamichi logo. They should also have the impedance and power rating on the back. Your speakers may not be original.
An easy fix for the lack of high frequeny output is to replace both tweeters in the upper door "sail" panels with a pair of high quality dome tweeters. The Nakamichi tweeters that came in the first generation LS are actually pretty lousy.
Good luck.
