I'd like to know what grade and brand of oil everyone uses.

I've got a 93 LS400 and I'm looking at going with Shell or Halvoline as per the soarer diehard website http://www.users.bigpond.com/pgscott...lAnalysis.htm. Right now I've got Penzoil 5W-30 but I can't say I notice much difference over the Valvoline previously used.

Anyone have successes or failures with particular brands and grades? Did one oil seem better than another? Anyone using fully synthetic or are you sticking with semi-synthetic? Let me know. I'd like to see a nice solid thread with useful oil information. Thanks guys.

Amsoil SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil

 

Bought my first roadway motor vehicle in 61, in 40+ years, who knows how many miles (250k on each of two Fords, a 68 and a 75), I have never experienced a motor failure, airborne or roadbed. I attribute that to good maintenance practices rather than the type of oil I have used.

That being said I have used Mobil 1 almost since it was introduced and will continue to do so.

 

same here... I also use Mobile 1 Synthetic. All the high-performance cars come stock from the factory with Mobile 1 Syn. These include "Chevrolet Corvette, all Porsches, Mercedes-Benz AMG models, Dodge Viper, Ford Mustang Cobra R and all Aston Martin cars." Amsoil 0-30W and Amsoil oil filter. Amsoil 75-90w rear end. Toyota Type IV transmission. Amsoil ATF in Power steering.

 

I've recently switched to full synthetic (using castrol synth 10W30 for summer), and as with previous car's I was planning on changing the oil every 3000mi. Based on inputs from the posts above it looks like I should switch to mobil1 full synthetic...

For anyone reading this thread I'd appreciate input on the following question - how often should you change your oil if you use full synthetic??

 

Any name-brand 5W-30 conventional oil (Valvoline, Castrol, etc.) for the past 12 years in my Lexus.

 

Mobil 1 with a purolator filter? It's like conventional oil with a Mobil 1 filter.

Use the Toyota/Lexus 90915-20004 "Made in Japan" (by Denso) oil filter. It's the best you can get for your Lexus.

 

I have been using AMSOIL 0W-30 (35k miles or 1 year change interval) on my supercharged 4Runner for 2 years. After an oil analysis showing that AMSOIL still has more than half of life left after 1 year and 15k miles, I am convinced and poured AMSOIL to my 98 LS400 the first time in June.

 

I realize I'm overdoing it, but I change my 0-30W Amsoil every 10,000 miles. Easy for me to keep up with and I don't know of an oil filter that goes much over 12,000 miles. I'd just as soon do 'em both at the same time.

 

I respectfully disagree. The Purolator Pure One Oil Filter is no Fram, it's a good quality filter. I've used 'em in my Mustangs, Viper GTS, and now the Lexus. I also change the oil religously in my Lexus every 3K miles. However, I'm not saying it's the best filter made, because it's not.

Purolator has chosen the BETA ratio-SAE Test J1858-as being representative of its "micron rating." A BETA ratio is a measure of the number of particles that enter the filter to the number of particles that leave the filter. The PureONE filter has a BETA ratio of 7.2 at 10 microns. This corresponds to an efficiency rating of 86.1%-meaning that the PureONE filter removes 86.1% of 10 micron-sized particles and above from contaminated oil

FWIW, the harder to find Mobil 1 oil filter is a bit better, according to their website: The Mobil 1 High Efficiency Oil Filter has a multiple-pass efficiency of 96 percent vs. an average of 82 percent for conventional oil filters.

Now I am no chemical engineer, but I agree that the Mobil 1 filter sounds very efficient, however the Pure One is no slouch either.

Got any specs on this filter? I am *always* open to new ideas, and I would be interested in more info on this Toyota filter. I take it that it's readily available at Toyota dealerships?

In fact, this thread has now urged me to locate a readily available source of Mobil 1 filters....

I was just kidding around. But the first thing I'd do is not buy into their marketing. Fram makes their filters sound good too.

The main concern of the PureOne is that they smashed so much filter material into the can that it might end up impeding the flow of oil. No point in having so much filter material if it isn't going to be filtering much for you after some miles.

The Toyota/Denso Japanese oil filter has an interesting filter design different from your typical oil filter. For more marketing on this one , check out this site:

AFAIK, the domestic-made Toyota oil filter is by Purolator.
