Default antenna mast

Needed to install new antenna mast on 1991 LS 400. followed great instructions . Allwent well except when I put the new mast in it will not fully retract. Motor stops about half way down. Is there a stop adjustment that can be set or any other ideas. Or do I have to put the whole coil in the casing before it will go full distance up and down. Any help apreciated

No adjustment can be made. The number of turns the motor makes before it stops is fixed. You have to remove the mast again and reinstall it. The trick is to get the gear to catch the cable as soon as the motor begins to turn. It helps to have another person activate the motor (turn on/off the radio) as you push the cable into the housing. It took me a couple tries before I was able to get it to retract completely.

I started with my radio on. I inserted the cable into the housing until it bottomed out. I kept constant pressure on the cable and then had someone turn off the radio. This helped to catch the cable quickly.

I also opened the housing before I installed the new mast to make sure that no peices of broken cable were in the housing. There was about 8 inches of broken cable in it.

Thanks I'll give it a try. Do you turn the radio on and off as you insetr the cable or on all the way to extend and off all the way to retract.Did you use the press AM CD or AM Tape buttons to fully extend mast to remove?

I did mine a year or so ago and I think I was cycling between radio on (and set to FM) and radio off. But what Yota says about a broken antenna is important...take your old and new antennas, both removed from the car, and push them down so you can measure the length of cable extending from the base. Compare them side by side. If the old is shorter than the new, then suspect that there's some broken part of the cable stuck on the reel inside the motor. You might also be able to tell by looking at the end of the cable on the old antenna to see if it looks like it fractured. Mine had broken antenna in the motor and I had to remove and open the motor.

All in all it was a lot easier than I imagined. I got the antenna mast for ~$20 at Pep Boys and the motor was pretty easy to access and work on.

My post in this thread has two links that have pics to add to what Yotarip and rob have said.

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls4...o-antenna.html

When you follow the instructions in the first link to remove and install the antenna rod, it will cause the motor to run longer to extend/retract the mast. If you're lucky, you won't have any broken peices in the spool otherwise following the instructions from the second link will help you get them out.
