Default High stoplight replacement

I thought it would be simple. I have a 1997 LS 400, and I get the nice dashboard light that indicates a blown light bulb. By god, one of them is out. It is one half of the high-center stoplight that is above the back seat.

My problem: How to replace this beast. I've tried to look in the trunk, removing lots of decorative coverings, can't get there. Tried to undo stuff in the passenger compartment, and nothing seems to work. This is a simple light but how do I replace it? ARG!

Tutorial is for the first gen, but should pretty much be the same process for yours.

I think removing the 95-97 LS 3rd brake light is done the same way as in the 98-00 LS. In my 00 LS, you lift up the forward edge of the brake light housing until the six red plastic tabs clear the rear deck. Then you release the two spring clips -- the whole process a few seconds.
