How long does it take for a timing belt to crack?
I have a '98 LS and inspected the TB, noticed that there are cracks on the smooth side. How long does it take these cracks to show after initial installation? When I had my '95 I had the TB change due to the same condition, but when I looked at the teeth it show no sign of wear. Do I need to worry about the TB snapping?

Not even worth negotiating with yourself. When those valves hit the pistons you'll be looking at way more that the 1500 it costs to have the belt replaced (assuming you don't diy it).
The teeth should never show signs of wear clearly. When I replaced mine I could see that the weakest part of the belt (where it would fail) is definitely the thinner section between the teeth and on mine, that's where the cracks were. Mine hadn't snapped tho.
I'd say cracks = replace, especially in that interference 1UZ you have there.

Are you asking about your timing belt or serpentine belt .
As if you inspected a TB then you only saw the serp .
The timing belt is under a cover that needs to be removed to see. Inspect it every 4-6 months after 100k once you see any fraying it will only last another 10000-15000 K

With water boarding techniques, much sooner than later.
Anyways, I changed mine after 16 years and 72k miles.

11 Years and 165K miles
I am in the process of changing mine now after 11 years and 165K miles. I am a DIY person but...I would recommend only Lexus parts for the timing belt. I don't know what it looks like...but I do know that its been a long way past the 90k mile mark that is recommended.

I had mine checked out and it seems that the belt was last changed at 95 000kms. The car now has 215 000kms. They said it was time to do it again.
It seems you guys in the states are doing the t-belt replacement later than what I'm being told. Whats the deal?!

I just took off the Timing Belt covers. My timing belt has the cracks in it also and the teeth look fine...but this is after 165k miles on a car I bought new and have never changed the Timing Belt until now.
