Thumbs up Oil viscosity change

Alright I decided to change my oil grade from 5w-30 to 10w-30 because I could hear the valves ticking and the car didn't tick when I first bought it with 78000 miles on it oh by the way it's a 96 LS 400 even though owners manual says 5w-30 it runs alot quieter now I'm running castrol syntec blend it took about 600 miles to hear the diferrence I have 110,000 miles on her by far best ride for the buck!

10w is a tad thicker than the 5w obviously and you probably won't get as good mileage with the 10w, but everything should be fine.

I bought my `96 LS400 with 78,000 miles on it. I switched from 5W-30 to 10W-30 (Mobil 1) when I noticed it was burning a little oil. This was about 110,000 miles. This weekend I just turned 200,000 miles. My `98 GS400 has been running on 10W-30 since I bought it at 156,000 miles. Now it's at 230,000. Both cars runs great. So I wouldn't the viscosity change.

I've switched to 5W-30 Pennzoil Platinum over the weekend, I'm noticing no significant difference in engine noise.

Hi,

I'm currently running 10w 40 Toyota Semi-Synthetic. But after checking my LS 400 manual 10w 30 should be the best oil. I'm a bit confused cause Lexls.com says 5w 30!

Here's a pic of my manual..

Puredrifter, how much oil do you put in for an oil change including the filter on your 00'?

I did my first oil change today and the manual said 6 quarts.

Hell, i always thought it was 5w-30 but it depended on the conditions of where you drive (ie hot vs. cold)...But what the hell do I know...

Hi Pure Drifter you always said that dino was good for any car but after reading for 3 months on every oil company and what their engineers said about different oils, dino oil ia good and so is synthetic which I use the engineers said that any synthetic which includes toyota cadilac porshe mercedes etc are all the same the 5w30 synthetic which will operate from -45 to +300 or a little higher it will proctect the engine thru the whole range of temps dino oil will go also most the range but not as good.
