Default Clicking noise under gear selector console

I have a 1997 LS400 and when I apply the foot brake while the transmission is in park there is a loud click which I can feel through the gear selector lever. Has anyone else had this happen, if so what is the cause?

My 95 does the same thing although it is not really obvious - I can feel and barely hear the click though. I am pretty sure all LS models have and do the very same thing. I am guessing the click is a servo maybe (?) that allows you to shift the car from "P" into a gear. When you press the brake it disengages the lock allowing you to shift the vehicle. Maybe somebody else can clean up my answer but mine does the same thing.

Hi,

WOW, I have the same exact problem. There has always been a clicking noise...that is normal, but recently it has become a bit louder. I have someone has idea in regards to this. I've been told it is shift lock solenoid, but I'm not sure. Thanks.

It is the shiftlock disengagement -- I don't hear it in mine, but I know what you are talking about. Sorry I can't be of more help on say, how to quieten it up

Neo,

...but the noise is normal right? It's just the mine is probably louder than most. I just want to make sure the noise is normal. Let me know.

The noise is normal, although it's not supposed to be loud. It should be almost undetectable.

sonyman,

So which part is it that's makes the clicking sound? Perhaps it's something that I need to replace?

I'm not positive, but I believe it's the shift lock solenoid. If you disassemble the shifter and test the solenoid by applying voltage across the SLS+ and SLS- terminals of the electrical connector for the shifter, you should be able to tell with certainty.

Thanks guys for your feedback. I agree that it would seem to be the shift lock disengaging but I also agree that it should be barely audible. It all seems to be working ok because the gear selector will not come out of park unless the brake pedal is depressed it just annoys me it makes such a loud click!
