how do you know you need new shocks?

I have 51k on my 01 430..I was thinking abt getting new ones just to ensure my best ride quality..

--but then there is always the sayin "if it aint broke, dont fix it"

I can complain about the smoothness when i hit bumps but I dont hear any clunk noises...

I'm also begining to hear metal ggrinding noises from the back of my car..when i push it up and down...ever since i got my bearings changed...

any ideas???

sounds like a shock is completely blown and has let all the oil inside leak away
