I am wondering on the inner workings of how our traction control system works. I see the traction control hooked up to the throttle body and know that it must restrict air from the throttle body somehow. If someone had a explanation on how it works a bit better that would help out greatly.

I have been driving in the snow, and traction control has been saving me every day. I have noticed that when traction control clicks in you can hear it in the rear, possibly the diff making a light clunking sound. I am trying to figure out what that sound is.

There is a second butterfly in the throttle body to restrict airflow.

Additionally, the Trac system uses the anti-lock brake system to apply braking pressure to a spinning wheel.

 

traction control is based on the ABS system and reads loss of traction through the wheels then alters the power to that wheel to give better traction that's a very basic understanding of the system but in depth the complete engine-ecu-body has a determining effect

 

That would explain the sound when Traction control is working. Must be the wheels or the diff. Glad nothing was wrong. Why does it make such a bad sound when it is working? I know on my step dad's GTO (05) it just raises the gas pedal and no weird sounds at all.

 

check the diff oil level

 

Diff fluid was just changed. it's not low. I would assume that the sound I am hearing is the on and off torque converted to the diff, while the ABS is being applied and released to gain traction by the rear brakes.

 

does the noise increase with speed like a hummm?

 

if a bearing went it would damage the ABS sensor and hence your problem

 

No not at all. It is more of a clicking sound when it is trying to get traction. I have only noticed this in the snow where it will just slip and not go anywhere with traction control on, as on ice. The bearings are good and it doesn't wind like straight cuts either..lol. I am sure it is something to do with ABS combined with the constant on off torque to the diff while trying to grasp traction.

 

Think I just suffered some bearing damage that took out my ABS sensor.

 

What brings that conclusion?

 

Probably won't remember now it was over 4 years ago!
