Default headlight leveling system

does anyone know how to trouble shoot this system?i removed both my lights and unhooked all the connectors to do some work(nothing to do with lights) when in i put them back in i got the message to check the leveling system, so i removed all the connectors again and made sure everything was plugged in tight and still no luck. they were working fine b4 i removed the headlights but now im stumped. anyone have any ideas?

Did you change anything within the leveling motor (move it around or so) before you installed it? Do the lights level up and down when you start the car with the HID's on?

I know you double checked but the only thing that can be wrong (assuming you didnt move the motor around, or so) are the connections. Report back.

Do you think you may have shorted something (which I cant imagine how) but maybe check the fuese JUST IN CASE before proceeding further. The HID leveling computer is behind the CD changer area, but I doubt it would have malfunctioned at the same time you took off the lights. Maybe try and reset the ECU, that might help?

This is a very rare problem on these cars, as these motors are supposed to outlive the car, so im sorry if i cant provide much useful help.

i was wondering if i might have shorted something but it seems like the leveling system runs off the same fuse as the ignition and sunroof and those both work. do you know where the sensors are located for this system?im going to reset the ECU and see what happens

There is an extensive diagnosis procedure for the autoleveling system in the "Body Electrical" section of the repair manual set - it begins on page BE-51 for my 00 LS400.

Here is one place you can get the repair manual set for your Lexus: http://www.lexus-parts.com/partlist....=26&ModelID=21

Sewell Lexus gives fast and friendly service on parts.

The repair manuals are very difficult to scan on my multifunction printer/scanner/fax/toaster -- the manuals are way too thick and the non-removable paper feeder thingy in the way. The last time I tried, I spent hours scanning, altering the image to fit within the tiny attachment limits of this forum and then posting relatively few pages.

I encourage anyone who has a Lexus to buy the repair manual set. They are "silly cheap" compared to the information and cost savings they provide. I've bought the repair manual set for almost every car I have owned for the past 40 years and can't imagine trying to do minor repairs and quality check a mechanic's work without them.

100% sure. on cluster it says headlight leveling and stays on with a red led on next to green area. I can get message to change if I use mode on steering wheel. I pulled lights out today and noticed a wedge bulb out, so i replaced that turned car back on and passenger light moved but still getting message on cluster. My TCCS and Epson code readers are not pulling a code for this. Thanks

if both are down id check the connections at the headlighs and then try to find a new headlight ECU.

other possibility is that its a wheel sensor (one of the 4 sensors at each wheel for the leveling system)
