Default '00 LS400 navigation

Is the navigation system in the '00 DVD and how much is it to get an updated version of the maps. Also can the same DVD in lets say '01+ ls430 be used in the '00?

Default Hopefully this helps you out.

Not sure how much it is to upgrade your Nav system to be more current though.

For a 00LS
GPS Navigation
A Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) navigation system, available as an option, features a touch-screen LCD display that also provides control functions for the standard audio system, climate control systems and trip computer. The navigation system provides turn-by-turn guidance by voice and on-screen prompts. Unlike some navigation systems that require inserting a CD-ROM disc to operate, or purchasing additional CD-ROM discs, the Lexus system houses a map database for nearly 90 U.S. metropolitan areas and all major national highways on a 2.0-gigabyte hard disk.

For a 01LS430
A DVD-ROM-based navigation system. The GPS navigation system offers faster performance and far greater map storage capacity than CD-ROM-based systems. The system includes a large 7-inch screen and integrates with the optional voice-activated digital/analog phone.

The '00 navi is not DVD based. My dealer told me a year ago it would cost me around $250 to get the most current map. I never bothered.. The '00 navi is the first generation navi and much slower than the DVD based navi.

The '98='00 2nd gen have the hard-drive based Nav. It cost me $260 to upgrade the Nav in my '99 LS (Sept '98 release Nav version) to the current Sept 2003 release. The latter is a far better version than the original release. Besides, the HD one has like 800K POIs or something like that.

Actually to be fair even though I like to refer to the 98-00 LS as the 3rd generation LS as well, Lexus refers to it as the 2nd (95-00 for them)since they call the 01 the 3rd.

Here is the beginning of a press release dated back in 2000.

Lexus Reinvents the Premium Luxury Car ... Again; 2001 LS 430 to Arrive in Fall

January 10, 2000, Detroit, Mich. - Lexus will again raise the automobile market's expectations of luxury models this fall when it introduces the third generation of its flagship sedan, the 2001 LS 430. Designed to be as much of a leap over current competitive luxury models as the first LS 400 was more than a decade ago, the all-new LS 430 provides ample evidence of the brand's unyielding pursuit of automotive perfection.

I thought so too till i read this:

http://www.lexus.com/cpo/model_detail/ls/400/1998.html

The 1998 LS 400 was the third-generation LS that received numerous exterior and interior refinements.

For 1998, the front of the LS 400 received a major face-lift. The hood lines were revised from a traditional chiseled look to a more dynamic shape. The rectangular headlight units were replaced with four distinctive parabolic multireflector headlamps with clear lens covers. The turn signals, previously located on the bumper corners, were moved to the headlights. The front grille is wider, and now incorporates eight horizontal lines instead of seven. The halogen foglamps have been relocated to the outer corners of the front air dam. The front air inlet was reshaped to improve the airflow to the engine compartment. The outside rearview mirrors were revised to reduce wind noise. With the coefficient of drag at 0.28, the LS 400 remains one of the most aerodynamic production cars in the world.

The LS 400's taillamps have been slightly modified. The restyled taillamps are 40 mm wider.

Five new exterior colors have been added: Baroque Red Metallic, Antique Bronze Mica, Imperial Jade Mica, Atlantis Blue Mica and Antique Sterling Mica replace Ebony Teal Pearl, Moonstone Pearl, Deep Jewel Green Pearl, Star Sapphire Pearl and Crystal Quartz Metallic, respectively.

Optional High-Intensity Discharge (HID) low-beam headlamps with dynamic auto leveling have been made available. The illumination of HID headlamps is almost three times that of conventional halogen headlights, while power consumption is reduced by roughly 30%. Arc discharge within a xenon-gas environment replaces conventional filament design within halogen gas. HID headlamps give the 1998 LS 400 a distinctive nighttime appearance.

The sportier, yet clean five-spoke wheel design replaces 1997's multispoke disc-type design. Introduced on the 1997 Coach® Edition LS 400, the wheel now has a shiny, machined finish with a protective clear coat for a crisp appearance.

A reverse auto tilt-down feature has been added to the front passenger's rearview mirror. The feature can be switched on and off using the mirror control switch on the instrument panel.
