I have a 94LS400. Last week the alternator went out. As the battery begin draing from keeping the car going, the guages flickered and the car started slowing dow as if it was choking for gas. I had someone jump me off and made it about three miles and it did the same thing. I was pressing the gas pedal all the way to the floor the whole time. Luckily I was only a mile from home.
I took the battery from my truck and made it home. Here's the weird part. The engine was knocking from the right side at idle up to about 200 rpm.
Since then I've replaced the alternator and battery. It still has a slight knock, more when its cold below 2000rpm. The car has more pickup than it ever has since I've owned it.
