I just bought a 9006 hid kit from autolamps-online and I had to sign some paperwork because hids are illegal in the usa? Will I get pulled over for this? I see newer cars driving around with hids all the time. Are those illegal too?

Will
couple of things, you got 6000k?
anyway, 4100k is the ONLY legal hid out there. starting from 6000k it's all illegal, and that's why they always say "for off-road use only" but 6000k cops can't tell the difference in most cases
also, altering light system on your car, meaning putting in an hid kit, technically is illegal as well, so i am not surrprised that you have to sign the paperwork
i got the 9006 kit, is that the 6000k? I dont know much about this, sorry.
It doesn't bother me if they are illegal, I just don't want to be constantly getting pulled over.
Right now I have some of those fake xeonon bulbs in there and ive never had a problem.

9006 is just the bulb size.. Well not even the bulb size it's the bottom mount on the bulb that snaps into the housing and holds in place.. The 6000K in the Kelvin number (light/color output).. What is the color of your lights when they are on?? Is it real bluish (8000K), white with a tinge of purple (6000K), or white with alittle blue(4100K)??
I read somewhere that aftermarket HIDs (4100K) are only legal if they are also installed with an auto-leveling system and a cleaning system. All OEM Lexus HIDs have the auto-leveling system....but NOT the cleaning system.....I noticed the Japan and Euro models have the cleaning system.
I agree that most cops wont ticket you for 6000K because they think its OEM on a luxury car. Just my 2 cents.
ztikmedia, how much you paid for your hid kit from autolamps? that will tell us if it's 6000k. but don't worry, you shouldn't be in trouble coz' a lot of lexus have hid anyway
PHML, not sure though, but i have a feeling that's nto true. all acura with hid doesn't have autoleveling or autocleaning (not even an option) but i am sure the car is dot legal
This excerpt is directly from the Philips website:
Note “Please note that Xenon light can only be fitted by a professional car dealer. To comply with European legal requirements Xenon light can only be fitted to your car in combination with an “automatic leveling device” and a headlamp whindshield cleaning system”.
Under their FAQ section, I found this:
6. Can I change my headlights to Xenon gas discharge?
Yes! But...For low beam applications a replacement of existing halogen bulbs against a new Xenon headlamp is necessary. In addition to that, a cleaning & automatic leveling device is required by law when using Xenon for low beam applications.
Sound like the 1st except applies to Euro standards..... I wonder if Japan has the same requirements? Does the US have less stringent requirements?
umm that's interesting. i believe that's the euro spec. i remember reading the dmv "rules" book a while ago and it said nothing about autoleveling and autoclean. but yes, if you think about it, all euro imports with hid, they have those two options included
I posted a message regarding my recent purchase a 2001 GS300's OEM HID bulbs and ballasts for my 1999 GS300. The len housing doesn't take the HID bulbs. Do you know any other way to hook them up without buying new len housing? I will also need your help and expertise how to hook them up with my GS300 non-HID. Very frustrated since the guy who sold me the set, sweared that they will fit in my non-HID housing. Advices and suggestions are greatly appreciated!
try talk to the guys over at autolamps-online.com i heard they have kits to rebase your d2r to 9006 which will fit the non-hid housing. for wiring, i think it would be plug and play, but i have never done it before so i don't know
