Be aware that altering the opacity of your lights is illegal in many states and the cops will ticket you for it. Also, it's dangerous, especially on headlight enclosures, because it reduces your visibility -- both how well you can see at night, and how well other people can see you.

More bluntly, anyone who smokes their headlight covers is an idiot.

I wouldn't do it if I were you.

RalAegidius who are you to be calling anyone an idiot. Not all smoked tail lights are completely black. I have never had visability problems and the light shines right through. There are man. out there that have smoked tail lights on thier cars as well. Just like tint if you go to dark your at risk for an accident but if you dont have anything productive to say than read instead of type.

Dent read Ral's comment again he said smoked headlights not tails. I believe what he was saying is that smoking the headlight lenses would be idiotic. I myself would also discourage smoking the actual headlight lense but smoking the reflector is perfectly fine.

His statement is a little bold and not specific. I would agree if we were talking about black out covers but if you spray or use film you have control over how dark it is. If its done in a light shade than there will be no ill side affects when the lights are on. I have a custom shop and though I dont like doing it, it can be done in a classy manner and not effect the visability. There is no nead for coments like that when there hasn't been any specific talk on what the person is trying to acomplish. I could be a show car or a weekend driver for all we know. Ask questions befor you make coments like that.

I agree with you completely on his use or wording just wanted to clarify just what I thought he was saying.

I did assume that the vehicle in question would be a daily driver of some sort, and not a trailer/show car.

To clarify, I was talking specifically about headlights since the thread starter mentioned both headlights and taillights. I don't think that smoking taillights is necessarily bad, since if it's not too dark it doesn't cause significant issues with the visibility of the taillights. I would be cautious on how dark to make it, just to be sure when you hit the brakes, people behind you can see it clearly.

But headlights, absolutely not. I would not smoke or darken those in any way. You will have less usable light coming out of them, and that's not a good idea, IMHO.

Reflectors, sure. I know a guy who did his using a "transparent black" model spray paint on the inside of the covers. Looks good and doesn't scratch or flake off.

You can't save the whole world. Let them smoke/paint their lights and get pulled over every day. Some Lexus owners are known to have deep pockets to pay for the tickets. They are willing to pay for the look.

Remember those GTC smoke light covers? A few years ago, every other car had it. Now they are all gone.
