Default Spied: Lexus RX prototype

Looks good so far. Seems quite low to the ground for an SUV. I still hope a GS-based SUV is coming though.

Spied: Lexus RX prototype

Lexus has been pretty good about keeping its upcoming 2009 RX crossover hidden from spy photographers, but just hours ago one of our ace photographers spotted a heavily disguised prototype out for a drive. This is the first prototype we've seen; everything else has been a mule disguised as the current RX350.

The photos don't give away too much, but we can definitely tell that the RX's basic shape is still intact. The waterfall-style front grille looks like it grows a little bit, not a surprise given the RX as a whole is expected to grow about two inches in length. We're expecting the same 3.5 liter V6 that's in the current model, although it'll be hooked up to a 6-speed automatic transmission, one more ratio than the current vehicle offers.

This morning, we received word that a three-row version of the RX will appear for the first time. What this could do to the more upmarket three-row GX470 is a question. The GX470 seems to be exceeding sales targets, but it's a much more rugged truck-based vehicle based on the same platform as Toyota's 4Runner.

A hybrid version of the RX is definitely on the production calendar. It's rumored to exceed 400 horsepower when it arrives in 2010 as a 2011 model. The base RX350 is expected to arrive in late '08 as a '09 model.

With these large pics, if the mule 2 RX body is to be used, based on the window line (space between the rear window and final rear gate) this is a 3rd-row version.

I wonder how the spies at Brenda Priddy & Company could tell it's a Lexus RX in the first place. With all the camo it looks like it could be anything.

Those are some really aggressively styled and sized rims BTW.

The taillights have already been stolen by the likes of Mitsu and Hyundai. Who knows who's next to steal it?

Probably based off the new Highlander too... so expect a new third row seating, and overall bigger size. Heard rumors of better fuel mileage as well!

400hp? Hmm, time to sell the sports cars if this actually comes out. I am thinking more around the lines of 300hp.

400hp must come from the same powertrain that powers the FT-HS, which uses the same 3.5L V6 but has much more powerful electric motors. It'd better has true mechanical AWD to handle that power though.

I noticed it too. It appears to be a pair of gloves. Can't wait to see what the next generation RX looks like. Most likely it will have the push button start stop feature just like the LX 570 and all latest Lexus sedans...

I think 268 is plenty. My mom's RX is fast and Car and Driver got their RX400h to do 0-60 in 6.6 seconds. So what does that make it? RX500h?

I like the fact that is it a dual exhausts system. Other than that I can't comment on much else since I can't make anything out
