Default Suggestions on fitting 6.5" mids

Im trying to fit 6.5" CDT CL-61A's up front in my '95 SC300. The stock speakers in the doors are 4". What would be the best approach for cosmetics and sound quality? I assume Ill use the stock location for the 1" tweets.

The first thing you should do is contact a local car audio place and have them quote you on it because it is beyond your basic bolt on installation. It is going to involve cutting and custom fabrication of a mounting bracket if it's possible at all. I don't have an SC300, but I do know that it's a PITA to add that size speaker to the car. Crutchfield doesn't even have speaker brackets for that car and they have brackets for everything that is possible.

Good luck,

JP

By the way, if you can't fit them in your car then I'll buy them from you.

Hey Meddle,

I ordered some CL-61a's and they came in today. I put them in and I am extremely disappointed in the sound quality of them. I had MTX Thunder 8000 8.5 5 1/4" components in there before these and the MTX blows them away. And I wasn't impressed by the MTX!

I don't know man, these things aren't even worth $50 never mind $149! Let me know what you think once you get yours installed, OK?

Good luck,

JP

Well, I did not show you the pic to scare you off but rather to show you what you'll have to do. Crutchfield probably does not make speaker brackets for that application because you need to do some cutting of the black enclosure. But that is easily cut using a hot soldering iron or Dremel tool- just enlarge that hole you see there enough to allow clearance of the speaker magnet.

That is really surprising man. Ive heard nothing but great things about these speakers. Originally $300 for the set before this mis painted batch became available on www.thezeb.com for $149.

Yeah, I was surprised too. I'm going to play with the tuning a bit more before I give up on them. They sound washed out and very very little mids, almost like they are blown or something. After speaking to their tech support they think I may have a defective set.

We'll see. When are you installing yours? I'd like to get your feedback on them.

Hopefully soon. Im totally new to audio install so Im trying to decide if I should give the door install a shot, or just let a local sound shop make some kick's for me.

OK, I found my problem. Part of it was tuning and part was the mounting of the speakers. I had been using a Scosche speaker bracket for my 5.25" components, but they weren't holding the CDTs to the door well enough and were causing vibrations that sounded like distortion. I made some speaker brackets out of 3/4" MDF using the plastic ones as a guide and the CDT mounting specs for the inner circle. Now the speakers fit perfectly, the amp is tuned to the new speakers and they sound unbelievable!

Your gonna like 'em Meddle! I'll post some pics soon.
