Default idmax or idq's?

I'll be installing on a 1999 gs400. I currently own a jbl 600.1 amp. i want to replace the factory 10" sub with either a idq or an idmax. I'm mostly looking for sq and I listen to hip hop so it would be nice to hear some deep bass.

A few questions:

What is the difference between ID 10 v.3 , IDQ 10 v.2 ? The IDQ says it cannot be used free air but i've read posts where the idq has been recommended for this setup.

I don't want the bass to drown out the rest of the system but since I have a bigger amp should I go with IDMAX instead of sending 600 watts to a 250 watt sub?

Does the IDMAX hit lower frequencies than the other two?

I was hoping to PM the subs to sounddomain.com. I found IDQ 10 v.2 for $110 and on other posts I heard $300 was about the price to pay for IDMAX 10"

Any links to cheap IDMAX sites so I can pricematch?

I've found $280 for IDMAX12 while back and tried to price match from sounddomain.com however, they only lowered from $450 to $400.
I went to woofersect.com and paid $320 + $20 for shipping.
Good Luck

The IDMAX and IDQ subs are entirely different animals.
The IDMAX has a much larger excursion and is much more capable in every way. It will produce deep, strong bass in a single woofer configuration, let alone a double. It weighs 28 pounds and many aspects of the install must be carefully considered, unless you're just going to drop it into a box and throw it into your trunk (not recommended).
You could go with (2) IDQ's if building a box, and send 600 watts to (2) 250 watt subs in parallel - that might be your cheaper, better way to go. Hip-hop needs bass, don't kid yourself. You probably wouldn't even be asking the first question if you were OK with the stock setup.
Both subs will produce deep bass, one will not necessarily hit "lower" than the other. It depends more on whether you have one vs. two woofers, and whether you go with a sealed, ported, or bandpass box. I recommend ported if you only listen to hip-hop.
As skpark said, woofersetc.com is a good website to deal with - I bought quite a bit of stuff from them and their hospitality and customer service was great.

My issue is trunk space. I was reading on sounddomain.com that these subs can do well free air and I was hoping I could just stick a idmax 10" in place of the factory subwoofer.

Anyone do this?

I've read people have used the JLaudio IB in place of the stock woofer. How has that worked out for you? What about rattles in the GS?

You can possibly do that, after making a support/spacer ring for the stock woofer hole, but I'd be worried about excessive rear deck vibration and structural integrity. The rear deck in the GS is thin sheet metal, bends very easily, and not designed to hold any significant weight. Yeah, some people have used the JL 10IB4 free-air in place of the stock, from what I've heard this is a relatively easy install, and you will get more bass than the stock woof. But it's not anywhere near the same class as an IDMAX.
If you're going to expose the rear deck in the GS, I highly recommend covering it with Dynamat Extreme (or similar) while you have it apart.
Some of the biggest complaints in the GS as far as rattles are the rear spoiler, trunk lid, or interior 3rd brake light. You'll need to rig up your system, figure out what rattles, then treat it. Liberal use of Dynamat helps a lot.

I currently have an IDQ 10 v.2 in an freeair application in my SC400 and have to say it sounds absolutely amazing considering its a free air application. I also mostly listen to hip hop and it booms so hard most people dont believe I have just one 10.

Ali, what reinforcements did you have to do? Is the rear deck similar to the gs? What size amp are you using? Did you leave the brake light cover on? Thanks!

1990Lex400,

Im not sure what you mean by reinforcements but I did have to modify the factory mount by adding in a spacer ring due to the IDQ being alot deeper speaker so it would not sit on the gas tank.
I dont know how similar the rear decks of the two cars are as I have only taken the SC apart and there is no brake light in the rear deck of the SC as it is in the spoiler.

Here is what it looks like without the speaker cover, which actually fits right back on and looks completely stock.

For the sub I'm running a 600 watt amp.
