I had an idea, to change my factory sub in nakamichi gs400 with a jl w6. Run it at 2ohm which is what factory amp runs at. Is this possible and has anybody had any luck with it running it free air.
W6 isn't a free-air. It's also a 6 ohm sub, I thought all you can get it down to is a 3 ohm if run as a single hooking up the dual voice coils in series. (I think, its been a long time) The factory amp is not powerful enough to run any JL sub either, its like maybe 25 watts.
The 10w0 will be your best bet as far as Infinite Baffle (free-air) JL goes. Also I hear the marine subwoofer M10IB5 (IB in the middle meaning Infinite Baffle) is a good choice for our trunks.
Here is a thread all about IB subs. Subs aftermarket nowadays need more power then the factory amp, perhaps an amp upgrade would be a better suggestion?
pitman, to make sure, are we talking about the original w6?
If so, the sub does not nearly have enough excursion for the amount of output you're probably wanting. It's one of my favorite subwoofers of all time, but I would never put them in an IB install. Go for a sealed box. These baby sounds awesome in them
